Tattoo After Care
Tattoo Aftercare Instructions:
Leave the second skin on for at least 24 hours, preferably up to 4 days:
Your artist applied a second skin dressing to protect your new tattoo. It’s normal to see fluid (plasma, ink, etc.) under the dressing—this is part of the healing process.
If the dressing starts peeling or leaking early, remove it sooner. Otherwise, leave it on for the full 3 days for optimal healing.
Removing the second skin:
When it’s time to remove the second skin, do so gently under warm water. Peel from the edges and take your time.
Wash your tattoo immediately with clean hands using warm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap (like Dove or Dial).
Pat dry with a soft, clean towel or let it air dry. Do not rub the area.
Applying ointment:
After cleaning, apply a thin layer of tattoo-safe ointment like Aquaphor, A&D ointment, or another tattoo aftercare product. Avoid petroleum jelly (Vaseline) as it can trap moisture and bacteria.
Apply a very small amount—the area should not feel greasy.
Cleaning and moisturizing (Days 2-14):
Clean your tattoo 2-3 times a day with mild soap and water, and reapply ointment each time.
After 3-4 days, switch to a fragrance-free lotion like Lubriderm or Curel to keep the area moisturized.
What to Expect:
Your tattoo may feel tender, swollen, or bruised for the first few days.
Peeling and flaking will start after 3-5 days. This is normal—do not pick or scratch at the peeling skin, as this can damage the tattoo.
Itching is normal but do not scratch the tattoo, even if it's really itchy. Scratching can ruin the design and lead to infection. Instead, gently pat the area if the itch is unbearable.
Avoid These Common Mistakes:
Do not soak your tattoo in water (no baths, pools, hot tubs) for at least 2-3 weeks.
No direct sun exposure—sunlight can fade your tattoo. Once healed, always apply sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) to protect it.
Do not wear tight clothing that may rub against the tattoo for the first few days.
Avoid scented lotions, oils, or perfumes on or near the tattoo until it is fully healed.
Signs of Infection:
If you notice any of the following, contact a healthcare provider right away:
Excessive redness, swelling, or warmth after a few days
Green or yellow discharge
Fever or chills
Intense pain that worsens instead of improving
